In Spanish, there are two different verbs for "to be," but they are not interchangeable. Each one has specific uses.
• el verbo ser •
Ser (<--Click for Explanation/Notes from Dr. Lemon)
• el verbo estar •
Estar (<--Click for Explanation/Notes from Dr. Lemon)
Feelings & Location are two instances where you use "estar."
~Remember it this way: "How you feel & where you are, always use the verb estar."

*Pay attention to the two little words (prepostions), "de" & "en."
"De" = "from." "En" = "in" or "at." This is important because "en" would indicate LOCATION, which means you would use "estar." "De" indicates origin (where one is FROM), so one would use "ser." Often, someone lives somewhere different from where they are from (where they grew up/spent their childhood). ~Elena es de Nashville. (She is FROM Nashville. That's here she grew up...spent most of her childhood.) ~Ahora, Elena está en Tampa. (Now, she is IN Tampa. That's her LOCATION.) |
